How Mother Figures Impact Our Lives
  + stars: | 2024-05-09 | by ( Catherine Pearson | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +13 min
For Mother’s Day, The Times asked readers to tell us about the mother figures in their lives. KELLY SANDOVAL, 48, SQUAMISH, B.C., CANADAI come from a multicultural background, but the Puerto Rican side of the family lived far away. When I showed up, Linda, my host mother, picked me up from the bus stop and made me tea and crumpets. If I had a nightmare and woke my mother up, she would tell me to climb into bed with Rita. During that year I also moved into my first apartment, away from the guidance of my mother.

John Paul Brammer writes the “¡Hola Papi!” advice column for The Cut at New York magazine, answering questions like, “Why am I dreaming about sex with a man when I’m a lesbian?” Or, “What if my partner judges me for writing smut?” This candor has given John Paul an intimate connection with his readers. However, as today’s episode reveals, he doesn’t think we necessarily need that level of openness with all of our loved ones. Ahead of Mother’s Day, Brammer reads an essay about a recent college graduate who sets out to spend the summer exploring his sexuality, but whose plans are derailed by his duty to his grandmother. It’s called “Young, Gay and Single Among the Nuns and Widows” by Kevin Hershey. Brammer says it’s “bizarre” how much this essay resonates with his own life.

But beyond what she's been told by others, by naming the song "Clara Bow," Swift appears to be signaling an affinity with the original "It" girl whose career reached its apex almost a century ago. Ultimately, for Sisneros and Bell, Swift's immortalization of their great-grandmother in "Clara Bow" is a gift they can hand down to future generations. "Normalize flying in economy," the content creator Hybee, who covers beauty and lifestyle, wrote as the caption of a recent video. Flying business class wasn't "worth the extra cost" to Elizabeth and her boyfriend, she said, because they would rather spend that money on the actual vacation. Inside OpenAI, Sam Altman is still approachable and friendly to staff, even though many of them are realizing how little they know about how the company operates. Altman responded simply that it would be "over soon," supplying staff with no other detail, according to two people who witnessed the exchange. The internal investigation nearing its end was also reported by the Wall Street Journal and The New York Times. Such a lack of candor with employees is a more recent development for Altman, one of the people familiar noted. The most surprising thing about the disclosure that King Charles III has been diagnosed with cancer after less than two years on the throne is the fact that it’s been disclosed at all. Cancer is common; candor about the British royal family’s health, not so much. Over the centuries, like many royal families, it has gone to great lengths to hide the condition of the sovereign’s body. Healthy king, healthy country. The idea of a physically disabled heir was unthinkable, especially in a country where the aristocracy defined itself by its military prowess.

The problem underscores a widely held consensus that Virginia’s mental health care system is in urgent need of reform, due to what Gov. Improving mental health care became a priority in the U.S. like never before as the pandemic brought new levels of isolation, fear and grief, in addition to pre-existing crises such as rising drug overdose deaths and the struggles burdening teen girls. Survey data from the U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration found that in 2022, about half of adults with any mental illness did not receive treatment. Elsewhere in the U.S., states' policy concerns and approaches to improving mental health care have varied. Mental health was listed as a budget priority in most states in an analysis by the National Association of State Budget Officers.

U.S. officials, after learning about the plot in late July, demanded that India investigate, a senior administration official said. High-level meetings and pledges of closer cooperation have continued, with Biden's secretaries of state and defense visiting Delhi this month. WASHINGTON (AP) — Retired Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, an unwavering voice of moderate conservatism and the first woman to serve on the nation’s highest court, died Friday. When she retired, Justice Clarence Thomas, a consistent conservative, called her “an outstanding colleague, civil in dissent and gracious when in the majority.”She could, nonetheless, express her views tartly. “I had never expected or aspired to be a Supreme Court justice," she said. The retired justice was relieved that he was comfortable and happy at the center, according to her son, Scott. “It has been a great privilege indeed to have served as a member of the court for 24 terms,” the justice wrote.
